The US visa program will resume accepting applications after a suspension that began in January.
According to official expectations, it is expected that about 10 million people will apply this year for the opportunity to live and work in the United States. The US Department of State has published a number of important changes to the program, which will enter into force on April 10 and will initially be implemented for the 2027 program. To this end, an update to the electronic application form (DS-5501) is being finalized, which will be ready at the moment the changes come into force.
One of the key changes is the requirement that applicants upload a valid passport and a scan of the page showing personal information and signature. This measure is intended to minimize the use of counterfeit passports and facilitate verification of the applicant’s identity and security. State Department officials will now be able to assess the admissibility of applicants based on country of birth and the likelihood that a person has ties to a country considered “low admissibility.”
All lottery applicants must pay a nominal fee of $1 at the time of submission of the form, with no exceptions. In addition, applications must indicate the applicant's education, including a high school diploma or its equivalent.
For married individuals, the application must include the spouse's details, including name, photo, date and place of birth, as well as details of all biological, legally adopted or adopted children of the spouse who are under the age of 21 at the time of submission of the initial application. The inclusion of spouses is mandatory, even if they do not currently live with the applicant or do not plan to immigrate together, except in the case of legal separation.
The program also strengthens mechanisms to identify sham marriages during the application process. Successful applicants must submit proof of relationship, including marriage certificates and other relevant documents, and additional investigations or documents may be required for verification.
The suspension of the program affected the processing of applications from 75 countries around the world, including various visa categories such as family reunification, employment visas, adoption, special visas and diversity visas. This decision did not stop the issuance of student, tourist or business visas, including visas for soccer fans who want to follow the World Cup closely, although the Trump administration has stated that it will verify all applicants.
The US government has emphasized that the restart of the program and the new changes are intended to increase security, prevent fraud, and ensure that the application process is clearer, fair, and verifiable for all candidates seeking the opportunity to live in the United States.
