Historian and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paskal Milo, invited to the show "Opinion", recalled the NATO bombing of Serbia, 27 years ago.
During this interview, the show's host Blendi Fevziu asked Milo about the meeting of Balkan leaders held in Crete on November 4, 1997, where the then Prime Minister of Albania, Fatos Nano, met with Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic.
"The meeting was not held at the level of delegations because we had set a condition for them. Because we said that the issue of Kosovo should be raised in the talks. Milosevic refused and we left it. We gave up on the meeting and only after we had lunch, we were all sitting together, going out the door there Nano met Milosevic, there they shook hands and there is that photo... there Milosevic proposed to Nano: 'Shall we meet?' And he said: 'Yes, we will meet.'
"And they met alone, at 4 pm, without delegations, on the second floor of the building where we were, a meeting that lasted about 90 minutes and that I did not support at the time for the sake of the truth," said Milo.
Further, the former minister explained that he did not agree, because Nano and Milosevic entered the meeting alone and did not provide full details on what they discussed: "Nothing. They entered alone. Nano has given his version, but it is a shallow, incomplete, undetailed version of what was discussed in 90 minutes."
Even from the Yugoslav side, Milo said that there are only statements in general terms. "After the meeting, they came out and held a press conference, there were journalists waiting for them behind the door, they made rounded statements without saying anything in essence about what they had talked about," Milo explained.
What kind of character was Milosevic?
The former minister said: "At first glance, he seemed like an intellectual because he was educated, spoke English. He had worked in the US. He had a complete and professional education, in addition to the political aspect that he already had a relatively long political experience. But he was a man who always sought to impose himself, he was not a man who could stand in equal positions. Even when he requested the meeting in Crete. Because we were prepared for the meeting, we had also received American consent to meet him. The hosts of the meeting were the Greeks and they were interested in the Albanians and Yugoslavs being able to meet in Crete, since they were the hosts of a summit such as the one of Southeast Europe. It was a plus for them."
What made Milosevic believe he could resist NATO's mission?
"First of all, he did not believe that NATO and the US would really go all the way in their undertaking to attack him. He always had hope there, because he thought that countries such as France, Italy or any other country would be able to refuse to attack a European country with which they had and still have close relations," Milo said. According to him, Milosevic believed in a fracture within the Alliance on the issue.
