Destruction of the Librazhd-Pogradec road

The Librazhd-Pogradec national road remains impassable, while the situation has worsened in the area known as "Arrat e Gurrës", where landslides continue.

Movement on this axis has been disrupted, creating numerous difficulties for residents and businesses in the area.

According to official information, a report from the Geological Survey is expected to determine the causes and pave the way for concrete interventions. One of the options being considered is the construction of a provisional road parallel to the railway line, while the Technical Council is expected to meet in the coming days to decide on further steps.

The damaged segment presents serious structural problems. The bridge in the area is reported to have suffered complete degradation, while the asphalt layer is cracked and considered beyond repair. Meanwhile, work on opening a temporary by-pass on the upper side of the existing road has also been suspended, as, according to sources, the intervention posed a risk to the lives of workers due to the instability of the terrain.

The Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH), on behalf of the Government, has described the landslide as a natural phenomenon caused by rainfall. However, the Prosecutor's Office has raised doubts about the circumstances of the incident and has launched an investigation since Sunday.

Investigations are underway for several criminal offenses, including “Abuse of office”, “Violation of equality in tenders or public auctions”, “Destruction of the road” and “Pollution of air, water or land”. Justice bodies are verifying whether the works for Corridor VIII have contributed to the destabilization of the existing segment.

The seventh lot of the highway has been won by the company "ANK", whose construction site is located about 2 kilometers from the site where the road collapsed. The same company, owned by Agim Kola, has been seen on the ground in recent days, contracted by the ARRSH to open the temporary bypass.

As a result of the blockade, citizens of Korça, Pogradec, Përrenjas and Librazhd traveling to Tirana are forced to use the Maliq–Gramsh axis, which not only increases the distance, but is also considered less safe. Another alternative, longer and more tiring, is through Tepelena and Leskovik.

Meanwhile, heavy tonnage vehicles coming from North Macedonia are being diverted towards the Arbr Road.
