The German fashion company Hugo Boss, today one of the most recognized names in the global luxury industry, has a history connected to the period of Nazi Germany, which continues to remain a subject of discussion in historical studies.
During the 1930s and during World War II, the company's factory in Metzingen produced uniforms for state and party structures of the Third Reich, under contracts that were distributed to many German textile companies at the time.
Researchers point out that the famous SS uniforms were not designed by Hugo Boss as a company, but by structures of the Nazi regime, while its role was mainly as a manufacturer and supplier. The company's founder, Hugo Ferdinand Boss, was a member of the Nazi Party, a fact that is historically documented.
During the war, the factory also used foreign workers and forced labor, a widespread practice in German industry of that period.
After the end of World War II, the company resumed its activities and over the decades transformed into an international luxury fashion brand. Hugo Boss has publicly acknowledged its historical past and has funded independent studies to document its role during the years 1933–1945.
