"Albanians manage drug trafficking", the Italian chief prosecutor:

Italian Chief Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone has stated that the sale of drugs is "unfortunately a very widespread phenomenon throughout the region".

In the latest report, Cantone said that this activity is managed by foreign criminal groups, especially Albanians and Nigerians, who have divided the territory and the type of substances between them.

"The vast majority of those accused of drug trafficking are foreigners and themselves connected to criminal networks, almost always directed by individuals of the same geographical origin, who operate within groups that appear to be very well structured at the organizational level, having as reference model, the traditional gangs of the national mafia", says chief prosecutor Cantone.

Nigerian groups, in particular, "appear to be particularly active in the sector of importing and selling heroin, a narcotic which a few years ago seemed to have almost disappeared from the illegal market".

Albanian groups, on the other hand, "have proved to be particularly active in the trade of cocaine and hashish; while the entities operating in Umbria maintain strong ties to the territory of origin and despite almost always being subjected to the highest caliber figures remaining”.

"In their homeland, these groups, unlike the Nigerians, have begun to reinvest the proceeds of criminal activities in the region, in some cases even using Italian citizens, in various economic sectors," said the prosecutor.
