The "Flamingo Revolution", the civic movement that began against tourism projects in Zvërnec and which has now transformed into a broader protest against the government and the political class, is gathering more and more every day not only citizens living in Albania, but also students, professionals and experts living abroad.
On the 17th day of the protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office, one of the speeches that attracted attention was that of an Albanian student, born and raised in England, who said that she had decided to return to Albania to contribute to her country, but that the reality she had found was completely different from what she had dreamed of.
" I was born and raised in England, but I decided to return to give something back to my country. I came because I believe that Albania deserves more and that our generation should have a chance to build its future here ," she said.
The student spoke about the difficulties that, according to her, young people in Albania are experiencing, citing the lack of meritocracy and equal opportunities.
" I have seen nepotism take away our opportunities. I have seen educated young people leave because they can't find space. I have seen people not move forward because connections and favors have taken the place of merit ," she declared.
However, the young woman said that she still believes in society and the citizens who are filling the square in front of the Prime Minister's Office every evening.
" But I also see a future and that is you. They are the people who don't give up, they are the young people who continue to believe that this country can change ," the student said.
In her speech, she also raised the daily problems faced by citizens in many areas of the country.
" People deserve water, they deserve light, they deserve normal living conditions. But these thieves are taking away their future ," she said to applause from protesters.
