High temperatures have also increased the flow of patients in the Emergency Department at the Berat Regional Hospital.
90-100 patients present to this ward every day, mainly elderly and chronically ill. According to emergency doctors, it is the elderly who present in a serious condition, with fever, gastroenteritis and blood pressure problems.
The Head of the Emergency Department at the Berat Regional Hospital, doctor Xhezair Guri, has stated that the flow of visits has been increasing every day and the majority of patients who present for medical treatment at the Emergency Department arrive there with digestive disorders due to the heat.
"Recently, with the increase in high ambient temperatures, the Emergency Department at Berat Hospital has also begun to be overloaded, as the number of patients has increased, especially the elderly, patients with cardiac pathologies, diabetics and patients with asthma. Cases have had an increasing trend from day to day and patients present various health problems, such as stomachaches and vomiting, digestive tract disorders. From the 80-90 visits we had every day, with these high temperatures we have had a daily increase in visits and hospitalizations of 10% more," Guri told Report TV.
He explains that the main cause is high temperatures and these categories should be careful, staying in cool environments and consuming fluids. The doctor added that there have also been severe cases that have been sent to Tirana, after treatment and first aid in Berat.
"This entire situation, which has recently arisen, has come about due to high temperatures, so we recommend that the elderly and chronically ill people stay in cool, shaded areas and consume as much fluids as possible. Cases, according to the diagnosis and protocols, are treated with serums, antipyretics, we also do tests and, if necessary, we hospitalize them. The most affected age groups are the elderly and the chronically ill, but there have also been cases of illness among young people, perhaps from contaminated and bad food. We have also had several complicated cases, which were initially treated at the Berat hospital and due to complications we have sent them to the Tirana hospital," said the doctor.
