Prohibited substances may have entered Albania that are declared in customs with other codes, as permitted materials because they are used in the processing industry.
Journalist Klodian Tomorri said in the MCN studio that such information must be confirmed, but the case of waste export to China and Thailand has revealed that the scandal could be much bigger than that.
" You saw what happened the other day with customs. He came out in a statement and said that the waste trapped in China is not a cargo from Albania, but has transited from Kosovo. In the case of Thailand, no one did transparency but publishes half information with the aim of creating confusion.
The scandal is clear: the port of Durres is an inn without gates. The big concern is that this port and these authorities that do not guarantee the safety and control of goods, how do they guarantee the safety of what enters Albania. There is information that needs to be confirmed, that banned substances have entered Albania that are declared in customs with other codes, as permitted materials because they are used in the processing industry.
You cannot export dangerous goods or import without corrupting the institutions charged by law to control the safety of the exchange of goods. What happened is clear. They are waste produced by Kurum, it sold it to the company Sokolaj shpk, but with great doubt because in the invoice the cargo was declared as iron oxide, but it was furnace waste ", he said.
The case in question, according to Tomorri, raises many doubts about the handling of Kurum waste before the discovery of the last shipment.
" In the invoice, they declared it as iron oxide. The statement is falsified. Customs have been informed since July. Someone has signaled the Basel network, which has started a request to the Albanian authorities, which have not been cooperative. Trading this waste if done according to rules and protocols is not a problem. But the company receiving them must have the processing capacity. They have chosen and this is a matter of profit and costs, they want to do it illegally, because that's how they earn more. We don't know what happened before with the waste that Kurumi produces because Kurumi didn't come yesterday ," he continued.
Tomorri emphasized the need for an in-depth investigation to answer the citizens' concerns.
" A detailed investigation and total transparency is required for citizens to receive answers to their concerns. We have learned from the sources that the import of aluminum slag has been allowed in the port of Durrës.
This is where evasion is considered the easiest crime. It is not about tax evasion that has become commonplace.
Albania does not have the technology to process them. The fact that they will return to Albania is more of a concern for this matter to be investigated in detail in the most transparent way possible ", said the journalist.
