Switzerland are preparing for one of the most important matches in their history as they face defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Kansas City. Facing one of the tournament's main favourites, captain Granit Xhaka is optimistic that his team has the motivation and confidence to aim for a historic result.
The midfielder of Albanian origin emphasized that approaching the decisive stages of the World Cup has further increased the team's ambition to continue the journey.
" When you are this close, the desire becomes even greater. This is a kind of positive pressure for us, because we want to continue further ," Xhaka declared.
The Swiss captain also focused on the confrontation with Lionel Messi, calling it a special moment for every footballer.
" It is a great privilege to play in the era of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. We have not yet analyzed Argentina in detail, but from tomorrow we will begin a very in-depth analysis ," he said.
However, Switzerland will face an opponent in exceptional form. Argentina have found the net in each of their last five World Cup matches, while Lionel Messi leads the tournament's scoring charts with eight goals, remaining the strongest point for Lionel Scaloni's side.
To secure qualification to the semi-finals and eliminate the defending champions, Switzerland will need to play a match at the highest level against a team that arrives at this stage with 12 consecutive wins in all competitions.
