A large-scale fire engulfed the Hekal area in Mallakastër this Sunday, burning several hectares of olive groves and bushes, while the flames have also endangered the Bylis Archaeological Park.

According to preliminary information, the fire broke out around 09:00 in the morning. Initially, the Ballsh firefighting forces managed to bring the situation under control, but strong winds reactivated the fire at noon, favoring the spread of flames to surrounding areas.

Due to the risk of the fire affecting the Bylis Archaeological Park, not only the fire brigades of Ballsh and Fier, but also aerial intervention were involved in the operation to extinguish the flames. The teams worked to isolate the active fires and protect one of the most important archaeological sites in the country.

Meanwhile, emergency structures continue to monitor the area, as strong winds still keep the risk of the fire reactivating high.

It is initially suspected that the cause of the fire was the burning of waste on the surrounding land, however, the police have launched investigations to fully clarify the causes and determine responsibilities.

So far, no injuries have been reported, while authorities are appealing to residents to avoid lighting fires in open areas, especially during high temperatures and strong winds, to prevent similar incidents.
