Is Putin Really Ready to Use Nuclear Weapons?
Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated in recent weeks that he is ready to use force if necessary.

And, by that, the Tsar means that he is ready to use nuclear weapons.

But is it really so?

Andrea Margelletti, military expert, former strategic advisor to the Minister of Defense and member of the Advisory Committee of the International Commission on Nuclear Disarmament has analyzed the threats of the Russian president.

Professor, how concrete is Putin's nuclear threat?

For two years, many people have been saying this, and I was among the first to say it at the beginning of the conflict, that the threat of the Russian president regarding the use of nuclear weapons is more than concrete. But compared to two years ago there are substantial differences.

Paradoxically, today this risk is less concrete. Two years ago the Ukrainian army was about to invade Crimea, and I assure you that if that had happened, Putin would have had no problem using the atomic bomb as a tactical weapon. Today, however, the conditions have changed: Ukraine is in trouble, Russia has regained parts of the territories that were taken from it at the beginning of the war, and Putin has no electoral problems because his victory is a given."

So there are no risks?

"Now a European conflict is concrete"

Are you talking about a third world war?

"No, for a European conflict. If this will then translate into a third world war, it is difficult to say now, but it is not only concrete, but very likely that the front of the war can be expanded."

What does it mean?

"This means that Putin, having taken back the parts of the territory that Ukraine had taken, is now unlikely to stop. And the next target is the Baltic countries. After all, it's enough to look around, to look at the European countries that matter most to understand that there are those who are preparing and those who, instead, are lagging behind".

You mean Germany, France and Italy?

"Of course. Germany has allocated 100 billion euros to strengthen the defense, France is questioning whether it is appropriate to send the army to Ukraine. While Italy is silent, it freezes and releases the funds intended for defense. We can also decide tomorrow to strengthen our defense, but it is not as if weapons can be bought in the supermarket: it will take at least two years before we can supply our defense with adequate weaponry"./ La Stampa
