Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Air India plane crash that killed 241 people, has recounted his grueling physical and psychological drama.
The 39-year-old, who was seen walking alive amidst flames and smoke from the wreckage of the Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad, says he feels "the luckiest man" but also "broken at heart."
The London-bound flight burst into flames just seconds after takeoff, causing a tragedy that shocked the world. Among the lives lost was his brother, Ajay, who was just a few seats away.
In an interview with the BBC, Ramesh, with tears in his eyes, said he still can't believe he's alive.
" I'm the only one who survived... I still can't believe it. It's a miracle. But I lost my brother... he was my pillar, the man who supported me every day," he said.
Since returning to Leicester, where he lives with his family, Ramesh has suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He does not speak to his wife and 4-year-old son, and spends his days isolated in his room.
"I'm alone... I don't want to talk to anyone. Night after night I think. I'm suffering. Every day is painful for my family ," he says through tears.
Ramesh suffered injuries to his leg, shoulder, knee and back, and says he still walks with difficulty. He has not been able to work or drive since June, while the family fishing business in Diu has closed.
His mother, according to family members, has not spoken for months after the tragic news.
Meanwhile, his advisers accuse Air India of failing to provide him with adequate psychological and financial care after the accident.
Air India has only offered £21,500 in temporary compensation, an amount the family considers insufficient.
According to advisers, the airline has refused three requests to meet with the family. Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash continues, after a preliminary report revealed that the fuel supply to the engines was cut off just seconds after takeoff.
