Only two people have managed to survive the tragic accident in South Korea, where a plane coming from Thailand, with 181 people on board, crashed while landing on the runway. Despite the search, the authorities officially announced the death of 179 people, 4 of them pilots and aircraft staff.
More than 40 people were between 50 and 60 years old, 39 were over 60 years old, 32 were between 40 and 50 years old, 24 were over 70 years old. A 3-year-old is the youngest victim.
South Korean media reports that among the victims is a family of 9 who had traveled to Thailand to celebrate their eldest's birthday. There were three municipal employees and five pensioners on the same flight.
The cause of the accident is suspected to have been a blow from a flock of birds. A flock of birds "covered the sky of the runway" before the crash, a Korean airport employee told local media about the tragic accident.
"[Before the accident] in the morning, a flock of birds flew up to the point that they covered the sky [over the airport runway]," they said. All the employees said it was the first time they had seen so many birds.
An eyewitness to the crash of the South Korean plane has described the terrifying moment. Kim Yong-cheol, 70, told Yonhap News that he was standing near the airport when he noticed something was wrong.
" I saw the plane coming down and I thought it was going to land when I noticed a flash of light. Then there was a loud noise followed by smoke in the air, and then I heard a series of explosions ," he said
Kim said the plane failed to land the first time, before turning around and making a fatal last attempt. In a published video, you can see how one of the engines explodes in the air.
Meanwhile, the testimony of the two flight attendants who survived the accident was also taken.
" Smoke came out of the engines and then there was an explosion ," said the rescued stewardess Mrs. Ku, while the second survivor, a 33-year-old stewardess, said she did not remember anything.
Even when he arrived at the hospital, he told the doctors "why am I here?". "I had put on my seat belt before landing, I thought the plane landed, but I don't remember anything after that."
The event has undoubtedly saddened the families of the victims. " How will I live alone after this? ” say most people, while the identification process is slow causing even more concern. " I want to see her one more time ", " I want to see her face for the last time ", are some of the cries of the family members of the victims.
" I never expected that the family trip would turn into a tragedy ," a 60-year-old man who lost his daughter-in-law, her daughter, her husband and their children on the same flight told Yonhap news agency.
