Latvian authorities have activated NATO fighter jets after a suspected drone temporarily entered the country's airspace near the Russian border, before leaving the area.
The Latvian military said no details have yet been released on the origin or type of the drone. However, NATO aircraft were immediately scrambled to monitor the situation and ensure airspace security.
Authorities stressed that the country remains under constant surveillance in coordination with NATO allies. Latvia does not have its own fighter jets and relies on the alliance's air missions to protect its territory.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions on NATO's eastern borders, amid the war in Ukraine and a surge in drone incidents in the region. According to the military, there have been several drone crashes near critical infrastructure in the east of the country in recent weeks.
Authorities suspect that the incidents may be related to electronic interference and jamming of the navigation systems of military drones operating near Russia's northwestern border.
In an incident earlier this month, suspected Ukrainian drones hit empty tanks at an oil depot near the Russian border, causing political tensions in Latvia and the resignation of several senior officials.
The Latvian government has warned that any violation of airspace will be considered a serious threat to national security.
