Former Mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, has been arrested at Thessaloniki's "Macedonia" international airport, pursuant to a European arrest warrant issued by Romanian authorities.
According to Greek police sources, Romanian authorities are seeking the extradition of the 74-year-old to serve a sentence imposed for several serious criminal offenses, including participation in a criminal organization, bribery and money laundering.
The arrest was carried out in an outdoor area of Thessaloniki airport on Saturday afternoon.
Currently, Oprescu is in custody, and on Monday he is expected to appear at the Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor's Office, where court proceedings will begin to review the extradition request submitted by the Romanian authorities.
