The former Minister of Education ends up in handcuffs by order of the Special Prosecution, at a delicate moment for the political balance in Podgorica...

The arrest of former Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Vesna Bratić, has opened a new chapter of tension in Montenegro's fragile politics. According to reports in Montenegrin media, including Vijesti, she was arrested in Podgorica by special police structures, on the orders of the Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT), as part of an investigation into abuse of office.

The event is not just an episode of the black chronicle. Bratić was one of the most controversial figures of the government led by Zdravko Krivokapić (2020–2022), a cabinet that came to power after the collapse of the thirty-year hegemony of Milo Đjukanović's DPS. She identified politically with the pro-Serbian and conservative line, often clashing with liberal circles and with a part of public opinion that saw her as a symbol of an ideological change in the state administration.

The current investigations are related, according to preliminary sources, to suspicions of administrative decisions that may have had financial consequences for the state, especially in the education sector. During her mandate, there were mass dismissals of school directors and restructurings that were contested in the courts. If these actions are proven illegal, the case will become a serious precedent for the criminal liability of high-ranking officials in Montenegro.

This arrest comes at a time when official Podgorica is trying to maintain institutional stability and strengthen its credentials on the path to the European Union. The fight against corruption and abuse of power remains one of Brussels' key conditions for advancing negotiations.

In this context, the SDT's action can be read as a message that no one is above the law, but it can equally be interpreted as part of an internal political repositioning, where former figures from previous governments face accountability.

For the region, developments in Montenegro have strategic importance. The stability of Podgorica directly affects the security architecture in the Adriatic and the internal ethnic balance in the country. A fair, transparent and depoliticized process against Bratić would strengthen the rule of law. Conversely, if the issue is perceived as selective or political, it could deepen polarization in a society already divided between Euro-Atlantic orientation and alternative regional influences.

Pending official communications from the prosecution, the arrest of Vesna Bratić marks another test for the Montenegrin justice system: is this a real turn towards European standards, or another episode in the fierce battle for control of the political narrative in Montenegro? Time and evidence will tell. /Pamphlet
