The EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security has given a strong statement. Borrel said that Europe is facing two difficult wars near its borders and tensions or conflicts that could easily get out of control.
The European diplomat made this statement at the end of the Schuman Security and Defense Forum in Brussels, where he warned that some of these crises could escalate into a major global confrontation at a time when, according to him, the world has become multipolar and the multilateral system that is supposed to keep the peace, has been profoundly weakened.
"We Europeans are facing two brutal wars near our borders and other situations that can easily escalate - in Libya, in the Sahel, in the Western Balkans, in the Caucasus, and we also see with concern the conflicts in Sudan, in the Sea of South China, or the gangs and drug cartels in Latin America and Central America", stressed Borrell.
He added that even institutions that are the core of the United Nations system, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), could be weakened.
"If the decisions of the International Court of Justice are not respected, the world will be in a much worse situation. And we won't be able to turn to her anymore, because it won't be worth it," said Borrell.
According to Borell, geography is very important and wars today are all interconnected.
"Every conflict, every crisis anywhere affects every other country in the world. These situations put public goods at risk, from energy prices to freedom of navigation," said Borrell.
