US President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the decision of the Brazilian judiciary which convicted former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro of an attempted coup, despite the pressure exerted by Washington in support of Bolsonaro.
"It's amazing how something like this happened. It's very similar to what they tried to do to me," Trump told the media, referring to his court cases, which, however, did not result in a conviction.
"I knew him when he was president of Brazil. He's a good man," added the US president, who had previously described the prosecution of his ally and admirer as a "witch hunt."
During Trump's term, the US imposed additional tariffs on Brazilian products and sanctions on the Federal Supreme Court (STF) judge who handled Bolsonaro's case. It also imposed travel restrictions on other members of the high court, in a sign of opposition to the judicial process.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the US would take "appropriate retaliatory measures" following Bolsonaro's heavy prison sentence.
"The political persecution by STF judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is already under US sanctions for human rights violations, continues. He and others in the high court decided to unjustly imprison former President Jair Bolsonaro. There will be an appropriate response from the US to this 'witch hunt,'" Rubio declared via the X platform.
Brazil's Foreign Ministry reacted immediately, stressing that threats like Rubio's will not intimidate our democracy and that authorities will defend the country's national sovereignty against any attack or attempted intervention, regardless of where they come from.
