Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in China, said that Moscow has never opposed Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
"As for Ukraine's membership in the EU, we have never opposed it ," Putin said, adding that Russia's position on NATO is completely different.
" This is another matter. Our position on this is known: we consider it unacceptable ," he stressed.
The Kremlin leader's statements come at a time when tensions with the West remain high, while the war in Ukraine has entered its fourth year, writes Reuters.
Putin claimed that the intervention in Ukraine came as a result of, in his opinion, the West's efforts to "absorb the entire post-Soviet space" through NATO expansion.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, after his meeting with Putin last month in Alaska, said that "Putin is tired of war", but added that "it remains to be seen whether peace will be achieved".
On the other hand, leaders of Ukraine and Western European countries are skeptical of Moscow's sincerity. They warn that a Russian victory in Ukraine could lead to a direct threat to NATO and European countries.
Putin dismissed these warnings, calling them "hysteria" from irresponsible people who, according to him, are presenting Russia as a global threat.
