Leaders of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran gather in Beijing for a major military parade...
For three days, Xi Jinping has been hosting leaders from Asia and the Middle East in one of China’s busiest commercial cities, a carefully orchestrated summit to outline his vision for a new world order. The diplomatic offensive culminates in an overt show of force: a giant military parade down Beijing’s main boulevard, featuring nuclear missiles, underwater drones and hypersonic weapons, accompanied by thousands of soldiers. Xi’s message is clear: China not only seeks to rewrite global rules, it is not afraid to challenge the West.
Alongside him, on the official rostrum, will be Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and dozens of other leaders of countries close to Beijing. The presence of the foursome Russia - China - North Korea - Iran at the same event is seen by Western analysts as a strong signal of the creation of an "anti-American axis", at a time when the US is trying to isolate Moscow for the war in Ukraine.
In this long list of China's friends, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also stands out, a leader who has always known how to play between the West and the East. His presence in Beijing, alongside Putin and Xi, is a clear message that Belgrade is strengthening its position as a strategic partner of China and Russia, at a time when tensions with the West are rising.
The summit and parade coincide with the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II, a date that Beijing and Moscow are using to rewrite the historical narrative: they present themselves as defenders of the post-war international order, while blaming the US and its allies for the current global crisis.
Xi is taking advantage of the moment when America under the Trump administration has strained its alliances and unleashed a trade war around the world. In this vacuum, China is presenting itself as a “credible alternative” to countries disappointed with Washington. The footage of the meetings, where Modi hugs Putin and other leaders talk animatedly with Xi, sends a clear signal: a new geopolitical axis is forming without the West at the center.
In the eyes of many analysts, this week is the strongest signal yet of Xi's campaign to undermine American leadership and establish China as an undisputed global power. /Adapted from "CNN"
