Operation “Doomsday” marks Israel’s first strike on Qatar; Doha speaks of flagrant violation of international law

Israel's unprecedented attack on the Qatari capital, Doha, has opened a new international crisis, shifting the conflict beyond the borders of Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service confirmed that the operation targeted senior Hamas leaders. Tel Aviv called the operation "Atzeret HaDin" - "Judgment Day", a name with symbolic meaning, referring to October 7, 2023, the day Hamas carried out the massacre in southern Israel.

The first reports of the explosions came from Axios journalist Barak Ravid, while witnesses on the ground confirmed to Reuters that they saw plumes of smoke and heard powerful explosions over the Katara district, a populated area in Doha. Israel claimed to have taken measures to avoid civilian casualties, using precision munitions and additional intelligence.

An important detail circulating in the Israeli media is that the attack was carried out with the approval of US President Donald Trump. This “green light” from Washington, if confirmed, would represent direct US involvement in an internationally contested operation, raising major questions about the diplomatic and legal implications.

Qatar's reaction was harsh. The government of Doha called the attack a "low and unacceptable act", emphasizing that it was a flagrant violation of international law and national sovereignty. The authorities decided to launch an investigation at the highest state level, while warning that the consequences would be dealt with in diplomatic and legal instances.

British military analyst Michael Clarke warned that the strike was an “extrajudicial execution in a neutral country” and represented a dangerous turn of events. “When you kill leaders you are negotiating with, there is no longer a political process, there is only escalation,” he said. Clarke added that the strike “directly blows up” any prospects for a ceasefire, while Qatar will be forced to review its relations with Hamas and other groups it has sheltered.

The situation became even more tense after the US Embassy in Doha issued an emergency order for American citizens, advising them to shelter in place. This makes Washington's contradiction even more apparent: on the one hand, it warns its citizens of the danger, while on the other, according to Israeli media, it has given its approval for the strike.

This attack not only calls into question Qatar's role as a mediator, but also risks involving the US directly in a new international crisis.
