Russia has described the deployment of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine as unacceptable, contrary to what US President Donald Trump stated, who said that Russia was open to such action.
Russia has repeatedly said it opposes the presence of NATO troops on the ground in Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said last week that Moscow would consider such a move a direct threat to Russia's sovereignty, even if the troops were operating there under a different flag.
Asked about Trump's comment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov avoided publicly refuting the US president, but essentially reiterated Russia's opposition to the idea.
"There is a position on this issue expressed by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. I have nothing to add to this and nothing to comment on," Peskov said.
Trump, on the other hand, said that he and Putin accepted the idea of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, if there is a solution there to end the war.
"Yes, he will accept it," Trump said. "I asked him specifically about that. He has no problem with that," the US president added.
