Fearing war, Europe reinstates conscription

Also prompted by the war in Ukraine, many European countries are discussing the return of military service, which was massively abolished in the old continent after the end of the Cold War.

In the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, conscription seemed to be an outdated model. Germany suspended it altogether in 2011, with the idea that it could only be activated if the Bundestag found a case of tension or defense, as stipulated in the German Constitution. The same applies to many other European countries.

Since 1993, of the 29 European countries that are now members of NATO, including Turkey, only six have maintained compulsory military service to this day. The UK, US and Canada have had purely professional armies for 50 years or more.

But after the Russian aggression against Ukraine, many countries increased their defense budgets and began to consider the restoration of compulsory military service. Immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Ukraine in 2014 and Lithuania a year after that, restored this service for men aged 18-26 and 25 years. But after Russia's attack last February, the Ukrainian government decided that all men between the ages of 18 and 60 could be called up to serve in the army.

Among other countries that are considering the return of military service are Latvia, Romania, the Netherlands and Sweden, France and Germany.
