The organization backed by Israel to take over food distribution in Gaza has admitted that it will not be able to feed some of the civilians most affected by the militarized complexes it plans to build.
Aid groups and the United Nations have already refused to cooperate with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a Swiss-registered organization led by a former US Marine. They say the foundation lacks the capacity to end the famine in Gaza and would make it harder to deliver aid to civilians caught up in other wars by undermining its neutrality.
Israel has not officially presented its plans for food distribution in Gaza, but statements from the GHF and announcements from Israeli officials envision four or five militarized distribution centers in southern Gaza, run by private security companies, under the supervision of Israeli military bases.
GHF is in “advanced discussions” with Israel on details and timing and hopes to have news soon, said a person involved in planning at the foundation.
Heads of household are expected to collect boxes weighing up to 20kg with several days' worth of food and basic hygiene items such as soap for their families. There is no provision for those too sick or weakened by hunger to walk long distances across Gaza's devastated landscape with heavy loads.
“ From what we understand, the plan would increase the ongoing suffering of children and families in the Gaza Strip. How can a mother of four, who has lost her husband, carry 20kg back to her makeshift tent, sometimes several kilometres away? The most vulnerable people, including the elderly, the disabled, the sick and injured, and orphans, will face enormous challenges in accessing aid ,” said United Nations Children’s Fund spokesman Jonathan Crickx.
