Colombia became the latest team to secure qualification for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after defeating Ghana 1-0 in a match in which they had complete control of the game.

The Latin American team was never troubled by their African opponents and fully deserved the victory. The only goal of the match was scored by Arias in the 14th minute, while the minimal score does not reflect the dominance of Colombia, which created many chances to score more goals.

Ghana failed to register a single clear-cut scoring chance throughout the match. In contrast, Colombia dictated the pace, controlled possession and delighted their thousands of fans in Kansas City, who celebrated their final qualification to the knockout stage.

In the round of 16, Colombia will face Switzerland. The match is scheduled to take place in Vancouver on July 7.

Ghana opened the match with a shot from Thomas Partey that went wide of the post before the first minute had passed. However, this remained the Africans' most dangerous attempt.

After that moment, Colombia took full control of the game. The lead was confirmed in the 14th minute, when Arias scored with a precise shot inside the area, following a cross from Luis Suárez.

Néstor Lorenzo's team continued to press and missed a number of chances to double their lead. Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi put in a superb performance, stopping Luis Díaz's efforts in the 20th and 58th minutes, a close-range header by Johan Mojica at the end of the first half (45+1') and Puerta's effort in the 55th minute.

Despite the Ghana goalkeeper's efforts, the African attack failed to react. Colombia calmly managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle and easily secured qualification for the round of 16.
