Accused of espionage, the Moscow court decides to keep the American journalist

A Moscow court has ruled that American Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich will remain in prison on espionage charges at least until the end of August, rejecting his request for release.

The 31-year-old was arrested at the end of March, while he was in Russia for reporting. Last month, the Moscow court decided to keep him in custody until August 30. His lawyers appealed the decision.

Evan Gershkovich appeared tense as he waited for the start of the hearing in the Moscow Court. Journalists were then asked to leave the courtroom and the proceedings took place behind closed doors.

Journalists had the opportunity to follow the decision via two large screens in a separate courtroom. While waiting for the judge, Gershkovich spoke with the parents, who were in the courtroom, where US Ambassador Lynne Tracy was also present.

"Evan continues to show tremendous strength in these very difficult circumstances,"  she told reporters.

She expressed that she was very disappointed by the decision, saying that Gershkovich was innocent and that Russia's accusations against him were baseless.

"Such hostage diplomacy is unacceptable and we call on the Russian Federation to release him," Tracky said.

Gershkovich and the "Wall Street Journal" have rejected the accusations and the American government and have described his arrest as unjust.

The arrest of Evan Gershkovich in the city of Yekaterinburg shocked journalists working in Russia, while the authorities have not provided details on what evidence they have based the accusations of espionage.
