Deadly attack in Rafah, US justifies Israel: Heartbroken for civilian

A spokesman for the National Security Council said the Israeli attack in Rafah that left dozens of civilians dead is "heartbreaking".

He added that the US was "actively engaging" with officials in Israel to determine exactly what happened, as he tried to emphasize that two Hamas terrorists had been killed.

" The devastating images after the IDF attack in Rafah last night that killed dozens of innocent Palestinians are heartbreaking. Israel has the right to go after Hamas and we understand that this attack killed two senior Hamas terrorists who are responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians .But as we have been clear, Israel must take every precaution possible to protect civilians ," the spokesman said in a statement.

The official added that the US is actively engaging with the Israel Defense Forces on the ground to assess what happened and to understand that the IDF is conducting an investigation.

At least 45 people were killed and 200 wounded in an Israeli attack on a camp for displaced people in Rafah on Sunday, according to Gaza authorities. The Israeli military claimed it struck a Hamas compound in the area, killing two senior officials of the militant group.

The US has repeatedly warned Israel against a full-scale ground invasion of Rafah without a plan to protect the millions of civilians who have taken refuge there.

Speaking after a visit to Israel last week, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said he had discovered "refinements" in Israel's plan, which he said was now more "targeted and limited" in scale.

US President Joe Biden has said he would not give heavy bombs to Israel in support of an operation in Rafah, but recently approved a $1 billion military aid package that includes tank ammunition and mortar shells.
