Senior officials from Israel and Syria are expected to hold a two-day meeting on Monday and Tuesday, under the mediation of the United States, in an effort to pave the way for a possible process of normalizing relations between the two countries.
The meeting was organized by Tom Barak, who will personally participate in the talks to guarantee their peaceful development and to take the first steps towards reducing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the region.
On a diplomatic level, this meeting is considered a significant success, as it will be the first contact of this level between Israel and Syria after the new leadership led by Al-Saraa came to power in Damascus.
The Israeli delegation will consist of Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military advisor, Mossad director-designate Roman Gofman, as well as a senior National Security Council official.
On the Syrian side, the meeting will be attended by the Foreign Minister of the interim government, Asaad al-Shaibani. According to diplomatic sources, Tom Barak has been conducting intensive cooperation with Prime Minister Netanyahu during December, with the aim of finding a sustainable formula for normalizing the situation in the region, as well as addressing issues related to Israel's operations inside Syrian territory.
The meeting is expected to be closely followed by the international community, while it remains to be seen whether this initiative will mark a real turning point in relations between the two historically hostile countries.
