Israel executes Hamas commander in West Bank

The Israeli army announced that it killed a Palestinian who was a member of the political wing of Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union during an operation in Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank.

In a joint statement, the Israeli army, police and internal security agency Shin Bet said they had carried out a "counter-terrorism operation in Tulkarem to eliminate Islam Odeh" and accused him of planning "terrorist attacks".

The statement said that during the operation, Odeh "opened fire on the security forces who surrounded him and returned fire which resulted in his killing".

"The forces found weapons, including components used to make bombs," the announcement said.

Odeh was recently appointed to command the terror network in Tulkarem and had begun planning additional terror attacks after another Hamas member, Zahi Oufi, was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

The Ezedin al-Qassam Brigade, the military wing of Hamas, also announced the death of the commander and leader of the Battalion of the Qassam Brigade in Tulkarem.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramahall announced that it had been informed about the death of Odeh, 29 years old, during the shooting in the Salam neighborhood of Tulkarem.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel last October, which sparked the war in Gaza. Since the war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 744 Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to the Ministry of Health in Ramallah.
