Israel has vowed to eliminate Yahya Sinwar, the new leader of Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
Sinwar is believed to have been the architect of the October 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. Sinwar's appointment as head of Hamas came after the group's political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran last week.
Iran has blamed Israel for the killing and vowed to retaliate. Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's murder.
Speaking during a visit to a military base, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is "determined" to defend itself.
"We are prepared both defensively and offensively," he told the new recruits.
Army chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi vowed that "we will find him [Sinwar] and attack him." He added that Israel will force Hamas to find a replacement for Yahya Sinwari.
Sinwar - the leader of Hamas in Gaza since 2017 - has not been seen since the October 7 attack, the deadliest in Israel's history.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stated that it is up to Sinwari to help achieve the ceasefire, stressing that he has been and continues to be the main decision-maker in the radical group, REL writes.
Meanwhile, analysts have said Sinwar may be more reluctant to agree to a Gaza ceasefire and is closer to Tehran than Haniyeh.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people in northern Israel and kidnapped nearly 250 others. Israel responded with an air, land and sea offensive that has so far killed almost 40,000 people, while Palestinians in Gaza are also facing a deep humanitarian crisis.
