Kim pledges full support for Russia's war against Ukraine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country "fully supports" Russia's military as a "fraternal obligation," while Russian President Vladimir Putin said the two countries have "special" relations, Pyongyang's state news agency KCNA reported on September 4.

Kim and Putin met on Wednesday on the sidelines of celebrations in China that were organized to mark Japan's surrender during World War II.

The two leaders were invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend a massive military parade. It was the first time the leaders of the three countries had attended such an event since the Cold War.

"Comrade Kim Jong Un and President Putin exchanged candid opinions on important international and regional issues," KCNA reported.

Putin "highly praised" North Korean soldiers fighting against Ukraine and said the two countries have "special relations of trust, friendship and alliance," KCNA said, REL reports.

North Korea has sent soldiers, artillery ammunition and missiles to Russia to support Moscow in its war against Ukraine.

South Korean intelligence said this week that nearly 2,000 North Korean troops sent to fight for Russia have been killed.

Seoul believes Pyongyang plans to deploy an additional 6,000 troops, while close to 1,000 soldiers are already in Russia.

Kim and Putin, according to KCNA, discussed increasing cooperation between the two countries.

After the conversation and leaving the room where the meeting was held, a staffer of Kim was seen cleaning a chair and a table that had been touched by the leader. Analysts believe that such actions are part of security measures to prevent other countries, even friendly ones, from trying to gather information about the North Korean leader's health.

Last year, Putin and Kim signed a mutual defense treaty that stipulates that each side will come to the aid of the other in the event of an armed attack.
