Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada will implement the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, confirming that he would be arrested if he traveled to Canadian territory.
The statement came in an interview published Friday on Bloomberg Podcasts, where Carney was asked directly whether Canada would take such action in accordance with international obligations. His answer was a resounding “yes.” However, he did not provide details on how the Canadian government would act in such a case.
Carney also stressed that formal recognition of a Palestinian state was a priority in his foreign policy, but not an ultimate goal.
"The end result is a free and viable Palestinian state living side by side, in peace and security, with the State of Israel," he said.
Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the ICC for their actions during the two-year Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Arrest warrants, issued last November, are also in effect for three top Hamas leaders, who have since been killed by Israeli forces.
Meanwhile, the ICC relies on states parties to the Rome Statute to execute its orders. In addition to Canada, countries such as Belgium, Ireland, South Africa, Spain, Norway and Switzerland have publicly confirmed that they would arrest Netanyahu if he were to trespass on their territory.
On the other hand, several countries such as Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland have refused to cooperate, while France and Italy have emphasized that Netanyahu enjoys immunity as a head of state, as Israel is not a party to the court.
