The Eiffel Tower will not turn on its lights tonight in honor of Pope Francis, who passed away this morning. The Vatican announced the news of his passing today.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said in her response that she would propose naming a location in the French capital after the Pope. Hidalgo paid tribute to Pope Francis' commitment to a church that reaches out to the most vulnerable, his willingness to place ecology at the center of spiritual and social concerns, and his calls to welcome refugees.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit pope in history. During his papacy, he was known for his simple approach and his people-oriented spirit, promoting the values of love, humility and care for the most marginalized in society.
