Lavrov: There are no illusions in our relationship with the US, the Trump

Moscow remains cautious in its relations with Washington, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, emphasizing that it has no illusions, while describing as noticeable and significant the change in the approach of the new American leadership compared to that of former President Joe Biden.

"It is vital not to succumb to illusions, to remain realistic and to be aware that there have been numerous cases when the United States has drastically changed its position. This is life. There is no way to escape this reality," Lavrov said, according to Tass.

He went on to add that "this factor must be taken into account. We certainly take it into account carefully when planning our actions," stressing that the current state of relations between Moscow and Washington can be described as a "return to normality."

"When I and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and then US National Security Advisor Mike Walz in Riyadh, at the suggestion of the Americans, both sides clearly agreed that foreign policy should be based on national interests," Lavrov recalled.

"This reflects the positions of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin," he explained, adding that "it is not about ideological expediency or attempts to expand influence indiscriminately."

Lavrov said Rubio assured him that the US respects the fact that every country has its own national interests, especially when it comes to great powers.

As he noted, two main conclusions emerge from this approach: first, that common national interests should be exploited in the pursuit of joint projects, and second, when interests conflict, it is the responsibility of the forces involved to prevent the escalation of conflict.

"This was the central topic of our discussions in Riyadh. Observing current developments, I believe that the Trump administration is acting in accordance with this approach," Lavrov said, adding "this is how we have always behaved - we have never preached to anyone."

Lavrov also noted that "this represents a significant change in Washington's policy compared to that of democratic governments."

"We note that this policy has caused considerable unrest among the American elite, including Republicans. Many of them are not used to acting this way - they are not used to a situation where they cannot control or decide on everything," Lavrov explained.
