The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list has marked 75 years since its creation on March 14, 1950, cementing itself as one of the most powerful and symbolic law enforcement tools worldwide. Originally created to help catch the most dangerous criminals of the day, the list has evolved to include a wide range of criminals: from terrorists and serial killers to drug cartel leaders and financial fraudsters who have caused billions of dollars in damage. According to FBI sources, since its creation, the list has included 535 fugitives, of whom 497 (93%) have been captured or located, with 163 cases solved thanks to the public’s help.

The “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list is not for ordinary criminals. It includes individuals considered major threats to public and national security. In recent decades, the list has reflected the changing nature of crime.

Rewards for information leading to the arrest of fugitives range from a minimum of $250,000 (increased from $100,000 in May 2023) for most of those listed, to $5 million for figures like Archaga Carías and Meza-Flores. These rewards are funded by programs such as the State Department's Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program.
