Russia is ready to play a mediating role in the developing crisis around Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after meeting with Kenya's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Musalia Mudavadi.
"We are ready, as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated, to play a mediating role in this political process, if necessary. We believe that we have the necessary capabilities," Lavrov said.
Referring to the development of the crisis, he stressed that it is difficult to predict how the situation might evolve.
According to him, United States President Donald Trump recently declared that Iran, as he put it, "has been completely defeated."
However, on the same day an Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that military operations have not ended.
“On the same day, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces stated: 'We still have a thousand targets ahead of us and we will continue to work on them at least until Passover,' that is, for at least another three weeks,” Lavrov said.
He added that, under these circumstances, it is extremely difficult to predict the consequences of the crisis or how it might end.
"It is difficult to predict the consequences of this crisis and how it might end, unless we stop immediately, come to our senses and start working on agreements that will not be broken this time," he declared.
According to him, reaching an agreement requires concrete guarantees. "This requires guarantees. I fully understand that Iran needs such guarantees ," Lavrov added.
At the same time, the Russian minister argued that Iran is acting defensively against the attacks it is receiving. “Iran is defending itself and responding to aggression with strikes against the military infrastructure of countries that attacked democracy,” he said.
Lavrov added that the tensions are also affecting countries in the Persian Gulf region. "Unfortunately, the Gulf Cooperation Council states are also suffering the consequences," the chief diplomat said.
