Montenegro sends message to SPAK, former Supreme Court president sentenced to 10
Vesna Medenica

The decision marks an important precedent in the region for punishing high-ranking officials, in stark contrast to Albania, where despite calls from the US and EU, no judge or prosecutor removed from vetting has ended up in prison. Nor has any official been asked to return the money...

The Montenegrin judiciary has dealt a major blow today, after the former president of the Supreme Court, Vesna Medenica, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for high-level corruption. According to the Supreme Court's decision, she was found guilty of two counts of unlawful influence on justice, related to taking money and manipulating court decisions.

Medenica, one of the most powerful figures in the Montenegrin justice system for over two decades, was acquitted of the charge of creating a criminal organization, but the court found him guilty of double interference in judicial decision-making for corrupt interests.

Meanwhile, her son, Miloš Medenica, was sentenced to 10 years and 2 months in prison for a series of criminal offenses, including the creation of a criminal organization, smuggling, unlawful influence through assistance, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to pre-trial detention due to the risk of flight. Both of them had their passports confiscated and were banned from leaving their residence.

In addition to the prison sentences, Medenica and her son were ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 euros each, as well as jointly repay over 2.7 million euros, damage caused to the state, with the other defendants. The Special Prosecution Office expressed satisfaction with the sentences, but warned that it will appeal the decision to seek even harsher sentences.

This sentence is a message to SPAK and GJKKO. To date, the only one who has received a high sentence is Lefter Koka, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but he was reduced to a summary trial and released from prison. No other official has received an exemplary sentence. Also, no one has been asked to return the stolen money.

The other element is that the US and the EU have demanded that the judges and prosecutors who remain in vetting be punished, but not because they have not been punished, but because today they enjoy millions.

The only example remains Bashkim Dedja, former President of the Constitutional Court, sentenced by a final decision only with probation, while dozens of others with staggering and unjustified wealth, have today become MPs, wealthy lawyers, professors or influential people in the media. /Pamphlet
