President Donald Trump is expected to announce a pilot program for 2026 that would reimburse all patients enrolled in the Medicare health insurance program for treatment with cannabidiol (CBD), the Washington Post reported.
Trump is also expected to discuss possible easing of restrictions on marijuana in the US.
If cannabis, like Tylenol with codeine, were to be classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, it could have far-reaching consequences for businesses, as well as for taxes and medical treatments.
CBD is used by millions of Americans for pain management. 60 percent of the American adult population reported having tried CBD in a Forbes survey.
It is used for a wide range of purposes, from pain relief and anxiety management to improving sleep.
The Washington Post reported that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) could launch its own CBD reimbursement program as early as next year. The agency had previously considered whether CBD use for cancer treatment could be covered. If Trump decides to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug, that could pave the way for more treatment options.
“They’re testing whether CBD can go from the supplement shelf to real medical use,” Michael Ryan, a financial expert and founder of MichaelRyanMoney.com, told Newsweek. He added that “this is a controlled experiment and most seniors won’t even notice.”
Reports emerged this week of Trump's plans to sign an executive order expanding access to cannabis. "The focus is not on recreational use, but on symptom relief," Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group and host of the podcast 9innings, told Newsweek.
"Many patients report that CBD helps with nausea, loss of appetite, and other side effects of chemotherapy, often with fewer side effects than conventional medications used for the same purposes," he said.
If cannabis, along with Tylenol, is classified with codeine instead of other Schedule I drugs like heroin and LSD, it could have implications for businesses and taxes, as well as for medical treatments, from cancer and chronic pain to anxiety disorders.
