Over 800 Russian drones over Kiev, the largest attack since the start of the war

A fire broke out in the Ukrainian government building in Kiev during a wave of nighttime bombing by Russia with 800 drones, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, three of them in the capital, in the worst attack the country has suffered since the start of the war.

"For the first time since the outbreak of war in February 2022, the roof and upper floors of the government headquarters were damaged due to an enemy attack," Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko said via Telegram, posting photos showing damage to part of the building.

As US President Donald Trump's diplomatic efforts to end the war appear to be faltering in recent days, much of Ukraine has been put on high alert since last night.

The capital was targeted in a widespread drone attack, with at least three women dead, an elderly woman, a young woman and a little girl, and 18 others injured, according to emergency services.

Many other buildings were also damaged during the nighttime bombings.

"The world must react to this catastrophe, not only with words, but also with actions. Sanctions pressure must be increased, especially on Russian oil and gas," the Ukrainian prime minister said, also calling for more "weapons" from her country's allies.

In late August, a massive drone and missile attack on Kiev killed at least 25 people and damaged the offices of the European Union delegation and the British Council in the Ukrainian capital.

Attacks were also reported overnight in several other regions of Ukraine, including Dnipropetrovsk, where regional military governor Serhiy Lysak said a 54-year-old man had been killed, and Zaporizhzhia, where a woman was reported dead. Authorities also reported a death in Sumy last night.
