German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Tuesday that Iran's leadership is in ruins, arguing that the Tehran regime can no longer survive without violence.
"If a regime can only stay in power through violence, then it has effectively come to an end. I suppose we are now witnessing the last days and weeks of this regime," Merz told reporters during his visit to India.
The chancellor added, "I hope there is a way to end this conflict peacefully. Even the mullahs' regime must accept this."
The chancellor's comments come after more than two weeks of nationwide anti-government demonstrations in Iran, which began over the country's dire economic situation. According to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, the Tehran regime, led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has killed more than 600 protesters and arrested more than 10,000 others in a brutal crackdown.
On Friday, Merz issued a joint statement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron condemning the crackdown. "We are deeply concerned by reports of violence by Iranian security forces and strongly condemn the killing of protesters," the statement said.
The EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced on Monday that she is ready to demand tougher sanctions against Iran.
In Germany, Merz's conservative bloc has long supported putting Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the EU's terrorist list. Recently, Germany's top conservative lawmakers pushed their ministers to take action on the issue.
Merz's comments came hours after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on countries that continue economic trade with Iran.
