Hungarian minister stings Zelensky: It doesn't matter if Ukraine abandons

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated that even if Ukraine drops its request to join NATO, this does not change the fact that the alliance has never reached consensus on its admission.

Speaking to the media, Szijjarto stressed that Ukraine's membership in NATO remains far from being realized, as there is no consensus within the alliance on this issue.

"It is absolutely clear that we are very far from any consensus in NATO. Ukraine's membership is simply an item on Kiev's agenda, but this has no importance, because it is not up to Ukraine to decide on this issue ," he said.

The Hungarian diplomat's comments come in response to reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signaled a willingness to abandon NATO membership efforts if the United States and the European Union offer Ukraine security guarantees as part of a peace agreement.

On December 14, the Financial Times newspaper, citing its sources, reported that Kiev was willing to withdraw from its NATO membership ambitions under certain circumstances, as part of efforts to end the war with Russia.

Hungary's statements reflect ongoing divisions within NATO over Ukraine's future in the alliance, at a time when the issue of European security remains at the center of international debate.
