German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described Germany's domestic situation in unusually critical tones, describing the economic situation in the country as "very bad" and "fully justified," while emphasizing that municipalities and communes are facing a dramatic deficit of up to 35 billion euros by the end of the year.
Speaking to MPs from his CDU/CSU party, Merz hailed yesterday's Ukraine summit in Berlin as a great achievement, but did not spare criticism of the domestic crisis in infrastructure, finance and social security. "I am proud of what we achieved at the Ukraine Summit. But domestically, the climate is difficult, and rightly so," Merz was quoted as saying, according to BILD sources.
The Chancellor said that reform of the pension system should be an absolute priority and called for the immediate establishment of a special commission to prepare a "revolution" in old-age pensions by 2026. He added that it is not just a political wish, but part of the government's programmatic agreement. At the same time, he called for a complete reorganization of all social security sectors for the elderly.
Merz openly criticized the ongoing delays in infrastructure projects and called the bureaucratic procedures that have blocked the reconstruction of bridges and roads across the country for decades “absurd.” “The trick is to declare all these projects as of supreme public interest, in order to accelerate their planning and implementation,” he said.
The most sensitive part of his statements concerned the financial situation of the municipalities. “The situation is dramatic. They are ending the year with a deficit of 30 to 35 billion euros. The federal government no longer has the space to increase tax revenues or launch new economic programs,” Merz warned. He stressed that the shift of the fiscal burden to the federal government cannot continue any longer.
Yet, amid criticism of the internal chaos, Merz found room for pride on the international stage. He declared that the summit on Ukraine in Berlin was a diplomatic success, where for the first time Europeans, Americans and Ukrainians came together at the same table. “We showed a united front against Russia and proved that Europe not only wants to, but can be a factor in the new global order,” he stressed.
