Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko seems to be imitating his close Russian friend Vladimir Putin at every turn.
After the death in prison of the Russian oppositionist, Alexei Navalny, the death of an oppositionist and critic of Lukashenko was also reported in Belarus.
Belarusian journalist and oppositionist Igor Lednik has reportedly died in prison, where he was serving a sentence for an article published in 2022 for which he was accused of defaming President Alexander Lukashenko.
The news was announced by the Social Democratic Party. Lednik was sentenced to 3 years in prison and his health deteriorated. The journalist and former politician had undergone gastrointestinal surgery and also suffered from heart problems.
Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikanovskaya, a leading figure in anti-Lukashenko dissent, said she was "devastated" by the death of a tireless freedom fighter.
" This death is a tragic symbol of the brutality of the Lukashenko regime. He must be held accountable for every death, for every hero lost, " she said on his X account.
