Benjamin Netanyahu has called Hassan Nasrallah the "central engine" of Iran's "axis of evil" and confirmed that Israel is behind his assassination.
"He and his people were the architects of the plan to destroy Israel," the Israeli prime minister said.
Netanyahu said he concluded that the "powerful blows" the IDF had dealt Hezbollah this week would not be enough.
He said: "As long as Nasrallah was alive, he would have quickly restored the capabilities we took away from Hezbollah."
"That's why I gave the directive - and Nasrallah is no longer with us."
Netanyahu linked the killing to the situation in Gaza, arguing that Hamas will be more likely to release Israeli hostages if it sees Hezbollah weakened.
"I would like to thank the IDF, the air force, the Ministry of Defense, the Mossad and the Shin Bet for the great achievements and not just yesterday," the prime minister said.
He hailed this week as a "historic turning point" and vowed "Israel is on the move."
"Citizens of Israel, we have great achievements, but the work is not yet finished. In the coming days we will face important challenges and we will face them together", he said.
Netanyahu continued: “All those who oppose the axis of evil, all those who groan under the violent tyranny of Iran and its proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Iran itself and elsewhere, all of them were filled with hope today. I say to the citizens of those countries: Israel stands with you."
