"Justice was served", Biden reacts to the killing of Nasrallah

President Joe Biden on Saturday called the Israeli strike that killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a "measure of justice" against his four-decade reign of terror.

His comments come after the militant group confirmed earlier on Saturday that Nasrallah, one of the group's founders, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut a day earlier.

Mr. Biden noted that the operation to eliminate Nasrallah was undertaken in the wider context of the conflict that began with the massacre of Israelis by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

"Nasrallah, the next day, made the fateful decision to join forces with Hamas and launch what he called a 'northern front' against Israel," President Biden said in a statement.

He also noted that Hezbollah under Nasrallah has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans.

However, President Biden added that the goal of the United States is to reduce tensions in the Middle East, through diplomatic means.

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the State Department on Saturday instructed several categories of employees at the US Embassy in Beirut and their family members to leave Lebanon.

"US Embassy personnel in Beirut should avoid personal travel without prior authorization," the State Department said in a statement.

The guidance states that additional restrictions may be imposed on US personnel if the security situation further deteriorates and threats increase.
