In recent days, a joint Italian-French operation against illegal immigration and human trafficking was carried out on Italy's western border. Investigators from the Italian State Police and the French National Police executed arrest warrants issued by the Italian and French judicial authorities against 15 people, on various charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, nine of whom were in Italy and six in France.
The operation is part of a wider investigation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Imperia and the Public Prosecutor's Office of Nice, which has involved numerous suspects. The investigations in this context are mainly based on the observation of movements in the western tip of the country, where Ventimiglia borders Menton. 200 incidents of aiding and abetting illegal immigration have been reported: migrants cross the border here mainly by car, train and bus. They are also provided with forged documents, tickets and new clothes to avoid checks. But all this, of course, does not come for free.
One of the arrested traffickers was carrying over 13,000 euros in cash, suspected to be proceeds from human trafficking across the Italian-French border. A price list is offered to migrants seeking help to cross the border: 300 euros for the car/taxi journey, which is the most expensive but also considered the safest and most discreet; 100 euros for the clandestine journey in heavy vehicles, where migrants hide in trailers without the knowledge of the drivers, posing a high risk to their safety; 70-100 euros for the train or bus, which involves providing forged documents, new clothes to avoid arousing suspicion and counterfeit luggage to blend in with the passengers; and 50 euros for the steep hill walk between Ventimiglia and Menton, full of rocks and difficult passages.
Payments are made mainly in cash, but traces of transactions made with prepaid cards or directly through bank transfers to current accounts held by traffickers have also been found.
