British authorities arrested former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in the exercise of public office as the UK's trade envoy on Tuesday. The investigation is linked to leaked email communications involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Police questioned him on Thursday on suspicion of sharing confidential material with Epstein. He was later released under investigation. The arrest does not include any charges of sexual misconduct. Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein.
The development has sparked reactions in the United States.
Skye Roberts, the brother of the late Virginia Giuffre, who has claimed she was trafficked to the UK in 2001 at the age of 17 to have sex with Mountbatten-Windsor, has reacted to the arrest. The former prince has consistently denied the allegations.
Roberts compared the British authorities' stance to that of the American administration. "The reality is that the United Kingdom is doing much more. I think the king can hold his head high when he comes here and say, 'I'm doing the best I can...' Whereas here in the United States, our president has yet to do a single thing comparable. And the survivors and the people are very disappointed by that," he said.
Robert Garcia, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, also called for action from Washington. “The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is a major step forward in our fight to ensure justice for the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s horrific crimes… Now is the time for the United States to end this White House cover-up. President Trump and his Epstein administration are not above the law,” he said.
US lawmakers have asked Mountbatten-Windsor to appear in the US to testify about his dealings with Epstein. Documents recently released by the US Department of Justice show that his name had been on the radar of authorities for 15 years before his arrest.
Maria Farmer, who first publicly denounced Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, called the arrest a step towards accountability. “Let us now demand that all the dominoes of power and corruption begin to fall,” she added.
Marijke Chartouni, another survivor, also called for similar action by US authorities. “If only the US Department of Justice would act with such determination. It took British police less than three weeks from the release of the final part of the Epstein files to arrest Andrew, making Pam Bondi and Kash Patel look increasingly incompetent,” she said.
