From Greece to Germany, 4 Antifa-linked groups declared terrorist organizations

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that four European-based groups will be designated as terrorist organizations as part of the administration's commitment to confront the "antifa" movement, an umbrella term for far-left groups that oppose fascism, sometimes with violence.

These foreign labels come after the Trump administration in September declared Antifa a domestic terrorist organization.

"The United States will continue to use all means at its disposal to defend our nation from these anti-American, anti-capitalist and anti-Christian terrorist groups," Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser, said in a statement.

The administration singled out Germany-based Antifa Ost, Italy-based Revolutionary International Front (FAI/FRI), and two groups in Greece, Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense, as groups that are now designated as foreign terrorist organizations.

The designations are scheduled to take effect on November 20.

In a fact sheet, the State Department presented its evidence against the groups. It described Antifa Ost as an organization that carried out between 2018 and 2023 “multiple attacks against individuals it perceives as ‘fascists’ or part of the ‘right-wing scene’ in Germany” and accused it of carrying out a series of attacks in Budapest in mid-February 2023.

The State Department noted that Hungary designated Antifa Ost a terrorist organization in September. President Trump met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the White House last week.

The Trump administration designated FAI/FRI because of its “claim of responsibility for threats of violence, bombings, and letter bombs against political and economic institutions, including a court and ‘other capitalist institutions,’” and cited that the “militant anarchist group” claims to have affiliates throughout Europe, South America, and Asia.

The department said the Greek-based group "Armed Proletarian Justice" is anarchist and "anti-capitalist" and has attempted and carried out improvised explosive device (IED) attacks against Greek government targets.

“Armed Proletarian Justice claimed responsibility for planting a bomb near the Greek riot police headquarters in Goudi, Greece on December 18, 2023,” the officials wrote.

The State Department further added that the Greek-based Revolutionary Class Self-Defense claimed responsibility for two IED attacks: one targeting the Greek Ministry of Labor on February 3, 2024, and the other targeting the Hellenic Train offices on April 11, 2025.

As a result of the sanctions, US citizens are prohibited from conducting transactions with sanctioned groups or individuals, and any property in the US owned by the groups or individuals affiliated with the groups is blocked.
