The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has strongly condemned the escalation of rhetoric around the war in the Middle East, warning that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure constitute war crimes.
" Under international law, deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are war crimes. Any person responsible for international crimes must face justice ," Türk declared, without directly mentioning any of the parties involved: the US, Iran or Israel.
The statement comes at a time when tensions are at their peak and rhetoric between the parties has escalated significantly. The war, which began on February 28 after US-Israeli attacks on Iran, has caused thousands of casualties and there are no clear signs of easing tensions.
US President Donald Trump has raised his tone in recent days, threatening to "destroy" Iran's energy infrastructure if negotiations fail and the Strait of Hormuz is not opened immediately.
In a recent reaction on the Truth Social platform, he wrote that "an entire civilization will die tonight," a statement that has sparked international reactions.
" I condemn the wave of inflammatory rhetoric that has been used in recent weeks by all parties to the conflict, including threats to destroy an entire civilization and targeting civilian infrastructure. It is disgusting ," Türk said.
He warned that carrying out these threats would constitute some of the most serious violations of international law.
" Statements that spread fear and terror among civilians are unacceptable and must stop immediately ," he added, calling on the international community to intervene urgently to reduce tensions and protect civilian lives.
The UN statement comes at a critical moment, as the deadline for the US ultimatum to Iran approaches and the risk of further escalation remains high.
