Orban threatens the EU: If you have nothing to offer, we will leave!
Viktor Orban

Viktor Orban's government has launched a popular "consultation" on Ukraine's EU membership: all voters are receiving a ballot by mail to decide on Ukraine's future membership in the European Union.

The vote has the appearance of a referendum, but has no legal value; Orban regularly uses this tool to legitimize his Eurosceptic positions. In view of this vote, the government is also promoting a relentless propaganda: giant posters with photos of Ursula von der Leyen and Volodymyr Zelensky appear on the streets: “We will not let them decide for us!”

In a letter to voters, Orban claims that "Brussels is accelerating Ukraine's accession without asking the people's opinion," while this would cause great damage to Hungary, with risks for farmers, jobs and pensions. According to Orban, Ukraine cannot win the war against Russia and its entry would destroy the EU.

Orban hopes for massive support to justify his position on this issue in Brussels, but he also hopes to have an argument in his internal struggle against his dangerous opponent, Peter Magyar, who could defeat him in next year's elections.

If the European Union “had been like it is today in 2004, it is not certain that we would have joined it,” Viktor Orban also said during a Fidesz party forum. Commenting on Hungary’s current position, Orban did not rule out Budapest’s exit from the EU, but added: “We have to decide when the moment will come when it will be worth taking the decision to leave.”

According to the prime minister, “exit should happen when the disadvantages of membership outweigh the advantages,” and for now “that moment has not yet come.” The Hungarian prime minister then turned to the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership. In a Facebook post, he wrote that if this were to happen, “we could lose everything we have worked for over the past 15 years,” as Kiev’s entry would mean “the end of agricultural subsidies, municipal tax cuts, and child benefits.”
